Compelling, humorous, deeply human, Made in L.A. is a story about immigration, the power of unity, and the courage it takes to find your voice.

As seen through the eyes of María, Maura, and Lupe, the workers' struggle for economic justice and personal dignity yields hope and growth, but it is also fraught with disappointments and dangers. As the campaign drags on, meetings at the Garment Worker Center become more contentious and the women undergo dramatic moments of conflict and discouragement. But the long campaign is a turning point from victimization to empowerment, as the three women find the strength and resources to continue their struggle.

Thursday, April 12, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.

Location: Boott Event Center, Boott Cotton Mills Museum 115 John Street, Lowell

For more information: 978-934-4182, DickensInLowell@uml.edu

Part of Dickens in Lowell 2012 (www.uml.edu/dickens), Dr. Nayder's talk challenges Dickens's version of his estranged wife's story. Nayder shares the difficulties she faced as Catherine's biographer.

Catherine Dickens played a crucial role in her famous husband’s tour of North America in 1842, though by the time he returned in 1867, he had separated from her and written her out of his life, referring to her as a “page” he had managed to erase.  For many years, critics and biographers followed Dickens’s lead in minimizing the importance of Catherine to his life and success and also in disparaging her, despite many happy years of marriage—and the ten children. This talk describes one biographer's efforts to recuperate Catherine’s story.
