Details of programs

Lowell Women's Week Kickoff Breakfast

Keynote Speaker: Susan Retik

Patti Quigley and Susan Retik -- whose husbands were killed in the Sept. 11 attacks --decided to use the financial support they received afterward to help war widows in Afghanistan, where the Al Qaeda planners of the terrorist strikes found harbor.

Quigley and Retik were both pregnant when hijacked jets carrying their husbands crashed into the World Trade Center in 2001, and met after the attacks. Retik saw an Oprah Winfrey show on Afghan women soon after the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, and the two widows decided to help Afghan women.

A Hard Life

Kalliopi Kalogerou has spent her whole life in the Greek village of Ano Ravenia where she was born in 1900. Simple witness of the century, she lived through Turkish domination and successive occupations linked to different wars. Most of her family stays elsewhere, in Greece or abroad (USA, Canada, Germany, Bulgaria); her shattered family world is representative of the Greek diaspora. The film is exclusively devoted to her life story, told to a young Epirot friend, Eleni Pangratiou-Alexakis, and to her daughter, Evguenia, both of whom have settled in the States. The result is a rich, yet austere film where nothing distracts the viewer from the dialogue and the face of the storyteller. It also constitutes an ordinary, yet important testimony on this long and painful page of Greek history.

The Magdalene Sisters

An unflinching drama that charts several years in the young lives of four "fallen women" who were rejected by their families and abandoned to the mercy of the Catholic Church in 1960s Ireland. While women's liberation sweeps the globe, these women are stripped of their liberty and dignity and condemned to indefinite servitude in The Magdalene Laundries, so that they may atone for their "sins".

Femmage = Feminine Collage + Assemblage

In the footsteps of the 70's Feminist Art movement, create a femmage with fabric and fiber. Femmage was created as a way to explore and honor women's resourcefulness and creativity. Miriam Shapiro and Melissa Meyer defined femmage in their article: "Waste Not Want Not: An Inquiry into What Women Saved and Assembled" as a word invented to include collage, assemblage, decoupage, and photomontage as created by women using skills attributed to women's work such as sewing and cooking.

The 21st Century Knitter

Join us for a lively discussion on how knitting has changed throughout the ages. From a trade done only be skilled craftsmen, to a domestic duty for women during times of war, and finally to a vibrant art form and outlet for expression practiced by woman of all ages, everywhere. In a time when domestic handicraft is sometimes considered unnecessary, we look outside the computerized and automated for something real to touch and make, with our hands. Knitting is welcomed, and encouraged, knit (and purl) then if you got 'em!

Heather Wang - Jewelry's Dual Role ~ Adornment and Memento

The power of a memento comes not from the object itself, but from the meaning and memory that the owner invests in it. Jewelry is one of the most powerful mementos. Its size allows it to be with the owner anytime, to remind them of a special person or event. When these pieces are passed down from one generation to the next, they become not only keepsakes, but represent part of the family history as well. So jewelry is not only a beautiful way for women adorn themselves, it can also connect them to their past and loved ones.

This lecture will discuss Sapelly's process using her own work and other artists as an example.. (3 - 4pm)

Dinah Was

The high price of fame is revealed in this roof-raising and soul-stirring portrait of American blues legend Dinah Washington. In 1959, "The Queen of the Blues" fights for her rights in the lobby of Las Vegas' Sahara Hotel where she is scheduled to perform, but in which she is not allowed to stay. Memories of her life and loves are brilliantly woven together with live performances of her classic hits including "What A Diff'rence A Day Makes," "I Wanna Be Loved," and "Come Rain or Come Shine."

"Believing the Present to be a Day of Action:"

Nineteenth Century Women's Organizations at the Pawtucket Church explores the relationship between condoned charitable activities while expanding women's educational opportunities. Between 1813 and 1900 the women of the West Parish Church of Dracut (later the Pawtucket Church of Lowell) used benevolent causes to pursue self-education. The members expanded the nineteenth century ideology on the proper role of women and fostered a new appreciation of their intellectual capabilities. This occurred at a time when women were expected to act selflessly to promote a wider social good, while restricting their educational advancement.
